Improved Gin Cocktail:

Taste Profile:

0.2 oz Maraschino Liqueur

2 dashes Angostura Bitters

Glass: Coupe

Instructions: Combine all ingredients and stir and strain into a coupe glass.

Garnish: Lemon Twist (I prefer an Orange Twist)

Notes: This cocktail is from Jerry Thomas’ Bar-Tender’s Guide. The original recipe calls for less Maraschino (marr-ə-skee-noh) and Boker’s Bitters. 16oz bottles of Angostura only require 1 dash. If you can find a bottle of Boker’s bitters, don’t use them-just give them to me.

1.5 oz Bonal Gentiane Quina

2 Dsh Fernet-Branca

Citrus-y and Sweet

Ingredients:

0.75 oz Rock Creek White Whiskey

0.75 oz Dolin Blanc

0.75 oz Gran Gala Orange Liqueur

0.75 oz fresh-squeezed Lime juice

Spritz or Wash glass with Absinthe

Glass: Coupe

Instructions:

Combine all ingredients and shake, then strain into chilled coupe lined with Absinthe or spritz Absinthe on top. Garnish with an orange twist.

Garnish:

Orange Twist

Notes:

If you want to use Lillet Blanc instead of Dolin Blanc, lemon instead of lime, and switch Gran Gala for any other Orange Liqueur, be my guest. Also, I don't have any preference in Absinthe just because you are using so little that it is strictly for ole-factory senses. Just make sure to adjust the amount of citrus you use, if it is bottled juice.

Syrups

Simple Syrup:

Ingredients:

1/2 cup Sugar Cane

1/2 cup Boiling Water

Instructions:

Combine boiling water and sugar and stir vigorously until sugar is fully dissolved, and refridgerate.

Grenadine:

Ingredients:

1/2 cup Pomegranate Juice

1/3 cup Sugar

0.25 oz Orange Flower Water

Instructions:

Add all ingredients to a pot on medium heat, stir until sugar is fully dissolved, and then turn heat to low. Wait for mixture to reduce by one quarter.

GINGER SYRUP:

Ingredients:

1 cup Simple Syrup

2 Cups Peeled and diced Ginger

Instructions:

then add diced ginger to blender and fill with top with sugar water ("simple syrup") and blend until ginger is completely ground. Pour Mixture into pot on low heat and taste until it is sufficiently ginger-y. Strain syrup out of ginger mix and refrigerate syrup.

Notes:

Adding spices, like Cardamom tastes great in the mixture.  In order to make ginger beer, add an equal part of water and a touch of yeast. Put mixture in a jar, in a cool (not too cold) dark area and open jar daily to make sure the mixture doesn’t explode. Taste until flavor is right and strain and refrigerate.
